2011 NBA ALL STAR WEEKEND LOS ANGELES

In Jun. 7 2009, before the Lakers-Magic Finals Game 2, NBA Commissioner David Stern announced that Los Angeles has been selected as the site of the NBA All-Star Weekend 2011, the 60th edition of this popular event.
The NBA All-Star Game will be played on Sunday, February 20. In the previous 2 days, the Staples Center also host the Rookie Challenge and the regular contests of the Saturday Night. The NBA All Star Jam Session will return to the Los Angeles Convention Center.

This is the fifth time the All-Star visits Los Angeles, and the second time to be held in the Staples Center, where Shaquille O'Neal got his second MVP trophy -first solo- in 2004. The other three editions were played in 1963, 1972, and 1983. The first one in the Los Angeles Sports Arena and the next two in the mythical Forum of Inglewood. Big stars like Bill Russell, Jerry West or Julius Erving won the MVP in these editions.

Comments about Los Angeles selection

"Its state-of-the-art facilities, passionate fans, and first-class hospitality and entertainment options make Los Angeles an ideal host for NBA All-Star," said Commissioner Stern. "We thank the city and STAPLES Center for welcoming us once again."

"For one week, L.A. will become the basketball capital of the world," Stern said. "It is always that way at All-Star, and it's one of my favorite events because not only does the world focus on us, but our legends come in and it becomes part of a family reunion, and this is a big deal for us."

"We're likely to shorten the rotation a bit because it's getting more difficult to find cities with the kinds of amenities, close hotel accommodations, the convention center and the like, and L.A. has been a popular destination," he said.

"There is no better place to host the action and drama of the NBA All-Star Game than the stage of so many award winning performances," said Mayor Villaraigosa. "On behalf of the City of Los Angeles, we look forward to welcoming NBA fans and players from across the country and around the globe to the entertainment capital of the world."

"Anybody that brings $100 million to my town at a time when the economy isn't doing well, and it'll be 2011, and hopefully we'll be pulling it out," Antonio Villaraigosa said, "but obviously this will be a great shot in the arm, a great opportunity for us to show off L.A. All I say is that every one of you please spend as much money you can in our town."
